Hubert Hurkacz of Poland has advanced to the final of the Chengdu Open, marking his first ATP Tour final appearance of the season. The Polish tennis player secured his spot by overcoming a challenging match against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, winning 6-7(8-10), 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals on Monday.
Hurkacz, who is 29 years old, will face Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final. Davidovich Fokina reached the final after defeating Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semifinal match.
This upcoming final will be Hurkacz’s 13th career ATP Tour final and his first since the Geneva tournament in May 2025. The 2026 season has been particularly challenging for Hurkacz, as he has dealt with injuries and a significant drop in his world ranking following a long-term injury layoff which ended in January.
Hurkacz, who was previously ranked as high as world No. 9, is aiming to capture his first ATP title since making his return to competition. In his past encounters with Davidovich Fokina, Hurkacz trails 2-4, adding an extra layer of intrigue to their upcoming face-off in the final.
