Apple has initiated legal proceedings against OpenAI, alleging in a U.S. federal court that the artificial intelligence firm has unlawfully exploited Apple’s proprietary trade secrets. The tech giant contends that OpenAI accessed confidential information concerning Apple’s hardware development, manufacturing techniques, and supply chain operations. This lawsuit underscores accusations that OpenAI gained an improper competitive edge as it progresses towards developing its own consumer AI hardware products.
The lawsuit claims that former Apple employees who transitioned to roles at OpenAI retained sensitive information, which was subsequently shared with the AI company. Apple asserts that these individuals accessed classified details, approached Apple suppliers, and sought out confidential insights during recruitment processes. Among those named in the lawsuit are former Apple executives and engineers, including Chang Liu, who allegedly did not return a company-issued laptop upon leaving, and Tang Yew Tan, a former senior executive at Apple who later took on the role of Chief Hardware Officer at OpenAI. Tan is accused of engaging in discussions with OpenAI affiliates and Apple suppliers prior to his departure.
Apple’s complaint suggests a systematic effort by OpenAI and its associated entities to exploit Apple’s confidential technologies, manufacturing knowledge, product development strategies, and supply chain connections. This, Apple argues, has been aimed at expediting OpenAI’s entry into the consumer AI hardware market. The tech company emphasizes that over 400 of its former employees have transitioned to OpenAI, and despite raising concerns directly with the AI firm, Apple claims it has not received any response.
In its legal action, Apple seeks both preliminary and permanent court orders to prevent the continued use of its trade secrets by OpenAI, in addition to financial compensation for what it describes as a deliberate and malicious misappropriation of its confidential business information. As of now, OpenAI has not issued any public statement regarding the allegations put forth by Apple.
