This summer’s intense heatwaves across Europe have resulted in at least 35,000 excess deaths, with the toll likely to rise as more countries finalize their evaluations. Germany, France, and Spain together account for over 25,000 of these deaths. Germany alone has reported approximately 14,000 heat-related fatalities from April to early August, marking the deadliest summer for heat since records began. In Spain, nearly 5,000 deaths have been attributed to the heat since May, also setting a record. Meanwhile, France has recorded about 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July, though this preliminary figure does not yet include data from August.
Other European nations, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have similarly experienced significant increases in mortality rates during the periods of extreme heat. Temperatures soared above 40°C in many parts of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records. Scientists caution that climate change is contributing to the increased frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events.
Identifying heat-related deaths presents a challenge, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being recorded as the direct cause of death. Experts anticipate that the overall death toll across Europe will rise as more delayed mortality data is compiled and August figures are included in the assessments.
