First Lady Melania Trump is set to host representatives from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on November 5, aiming to discuss the recent temporary ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, located in Ukraine’s Kherson region. According to a White House statement, the event will focus on the ceasefire initiative, which was facilitated by Melania Trump through independent diplomatic efforts.
The ceasefire, lasting from October 27 to November 1, allowed for the evacuation of several hundred civilians from Oleshky, with most opting to move to areas under Ukrainian control. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, acknowledged the First Lady’s team for their role in securing the ceasefire and coordinating the evacuation. The ceasefire document was signed by representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States, with Washington serving as a guarantor.
Despite the ceasefire, concerns linger over the situation in Oleshky. Ukrainian military officials have raised alarms that Russian forces might have exploited the pause in hostilities to reposition equipment and fortify their defenses. Ukrainian authorities, however, counter claims of ceasefire violations, asserting that observed movements were part of demining operations.
Humanitarian aid continues to be provided to civilians who remain in Oleshky, and additional evacuation efforts may be considered in the future. The upcoming meeting at the White House presents a potential platform for further diplomatic engagement between Russia and Ukraine, although the specific representatives attending and the meeting’s agenda have not been disclosed by the White House.
