Ukraine has persisted with strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, despite calls from former U.S. President Donald Trump for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cease such operations. Trump has attributed these attacks to rising fuel prices and strained diesel supplies globally.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine targeted an oil facility in Russia’s Samara region, in addition to reporting strikes on a Russian vessel in the Black Sea and a drone-related facility in the Oryol region. These actions come amid Trump’s assertions that Ukraine’s assaults on Russian refineries are exacerbating global diesel supply disruptions. However, energy analysts have cited the broader impact of the Iran war on global oil markets as a significant factor contributing to the increase in fuel prices.
Ukraine’s ongoing campaign against Russian refineries has reportedly impacted a substantial portion of Russia’s refining capacity, leading to fuel shortages and rationing in some regions of the country. In response, Russia has extended its restrictions on diesel exports, further tightening international fuel supplies.
Despite the tensions, Zelenskyy has expressed support for an energy ceasefire with Russia. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown little interest in halting attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, rejecting proposals to link a cessation of Russian strikes with an end to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to launch missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure and other critical facilities. Ukrainian authorities have raised concerns that these continued strikes could exacerbate problems with electricity and heating supplies as winter approaches.
