Polish authorities have thwarted what they describe as a Russian-supported scheme to assassinate a Ukrainian-American in Warsaw, according to Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This incident is deemed unprecedented, marking the first known attempt by a Russian-linked entity to target a United States citizen within another NATO member state. The intended target, as detailed by Polish officials, is a US citizen of Ukrainian descent, believed to be perceived as a threat by the Russian government.
On August 7, a suspect allegedly recruited by Russian intelligence services was apprehended in Poland and is currently being held in custody for a three-month period.
