The Greenland leader’s assessment directly contradicts suggestions that the dispute has been resolved through recent diplomatic engagement. Nielsen specifically stated that the US continues to explore “paths to ownership and control over Greenland,” indicating that American strategic objectives in the region have not been abandoned. This declaration represents a significant counterpoint to President Trump’s recent claims of having achieved “total US access” to Greenland through NATO arrangements.
Trump’s interest in Greenland stems from national security concerns related to the Arctic’s strategic importance, particularly regarding Russian and Chinese activities in the region. Earlier this year, the President’s refusal to exclude military options for securing control of Greenland created substantial rifts within the NATO alliance.
