Austria is exploring the possibility of joining Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative, as the two nations aim to bolster their defense and security cooperation. This development comes following a working visit by Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner to Luxembourg, where she engaged in discussions with her Luxembourg counterpart, Defence Minister Yuriko Backes, about enhancing bilateral collaboration in areas such as defense, space, and cybersecurity.
During the visit, talks were also held with satellite operator SES to discuss Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program. Minister Tanner emphasized the increasing importance of secure satellite communications amid rising geopolitical tensions, highlighting that a stronger partnership could enhance the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy.
GovSat 2 is aimed at providing secure communication services for Luxembourg’s defense sector, the European Union, NATO, and collaborating countries, with a satellite launch scheduled for 2029. The initiative is part of Luxembourg’s broader efforts to enhance its defense capabilities and strengthen alliances in the region.
In addition to discussing satellite communications, Austria and Luxembourg signed a letter of intent to deepen cooperation across various defense-related sectors. This agreement covers areas such as cybersecurity, space technology, and military training, underscoring the commitment of both countries to work closely on multiple fronts. While Austria has yet to announce the financial details of its potential investment in the GovSat 2 project, the discussions mark a significant step towards closer collaboration between the two nations.
