Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a public appeal for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting the talks be held in a neutral location as part of ongoing efforts to end the conflict. Zelenskyy proposed that the discussions take place in countries such as Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation, emphasizing that crucial decisions to resolve the war can only be achieved through direct dialogue between the leaders. He urged for a specific date to be established for these negotiations.
As part of his initiative, Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s readiness to enact a complete ceasefire during the talks. He also proposed an all-for-all prisoner exchange as a preliminary measure to build trust between the parties. Additionally, Zelenskyy called for the return of Ukrainian civilians and children who have been taken from conflict-affected areas.
This proposal emerges as military activities persist on both sides. Russia has stepped up its aerial bombardments on Ukraine, while Ukraine has been conducting long-range drone strikes on locations deep within Russian territory. The ongoing hostilities underscore the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to find a resolution.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has shown support for the potential meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin. Trump emphasized that successful negotiations would require concessions from both sides to reach a peaceful settlement.
The Kremlin acknowledged receipt of Zelenskyy’s proposal and confirmed that President Putin has been informed. However, Russian officials noted that the proposal is still under preliminary review and has not been examined in detail yet.
